My first jigging trip in Japan

February 5th, 2005

Jigging on the Oqutopus charter

This is something I've always wanted to try jigging on the Octopus boat and decided this was a great time to go. The winter offers great fishing and you can really get into some great yellowtail fishing. The boat that I went on specializes in large game. Other boats will try for smaller ones but on this boat they really only want the kings of the ocean.

So we left Fukuoka at 5am and headed to the port where the charter leaves from. Departure was 6am sharp and to get to the point it would take 2 1/2 hours at 25 knots.

When we got to the point we were told to get out there and commence jigging. The lures were metal jigs in weights of 150-200 grams, leaders were 100lbs. We would jig for 5 minutes then would have to wait to get back into position. This was repeated over and over until someone would get a fish. The guys at the end of the boat killed us. They got a nice sized Hiramasa (yellowtail) of 10 kg. Then an hour later their other partner got a nice KARE (flatfish) of about 3kg. Overall the boat got 7 Hiramasa and the one flat fish. I got nothing and my partner Mr.Okada had one on but lost it. At about 2:30 PM we were done and headed back to the city. That's the way it goes and next time I hope to get the big one.

I think my next trip will be for smaller but more plentiful fish called NERIGO/BABY KANPACHI or juvenile amber jacks.

Here are some pictures of our trip:
