Marinora City Rocks Again
May 7th, 2005

Every year during the spring time I love heading out to a local spot that I learned about 2 or 3 seasons ago. It's right in the city and the place is called Marinoa city, it produces great fishing opportunities from May to July. For some reason the bass love cruising around this area looking for small shrimps and bait fish. I guess the smaller baits use this area for protection from their predators. The best time we find is late evening just as the sun is setting.
For this kind of fishing we use long telescopic rods in lengths of 5-6 meters (12-15 feet long) perfect for this kind of fishing. Smaller reels are only needed for this game because they really don't peel lots of line out, I prefer Shimano 2,000 series. I think the key for this game though is using floral carbon leaders of 6-8lbs (Japanese 1.5 gou) which are simply deadly and can not be seen by these fish. Also a long leader is best of about 2-3 meters weighted with a small split shot above the hook. Small floats are also best for this and a good size float of about 1.5 is good along with a 1.5 lead weight. So now you know the gear what's the bait right?
Our bait of choice is something that can't be beat!! Live shrimps are the choice and they are deadly bait. A live bucket with an air pump is needed to keep them alive and well for a long fishing day. Typical sizes are 3-5cm and can be easily bought but sometimes hard to find during the spring months at local shops. Just insert the hook through the tail but not too much because you don't to kill the shrimp, once inserted simply cast out with a float and wait.
On Saturday we went out because there was a tide called "OSHIO" which means a super high/low spring tide. My wife actually pointed this out to me and we decided Saturday night would be good as the tide was changing back in. Overall we only got one hit but other anglers were having good results with a few getting caught. This season is just starting so stay tuned as the season gets better and better!
Tight lines,
Nigel
